Kathy Chao

Former Mayor of City of San Pablo

In 1978, at the age of 7 years old, Kathy Meuy Seng Chao Rothberg, emigrated with her family as Vietnam War political refugees to the Bay Area. She now serves as Mayor of San Pablo City (www.ci.san-pablo.ca.us). At a very young age, Mayor Chao Rothberg learned the importance of resourcefulness, family and community, the value of volunteerism, and what it takes to succeed in a new country.

 

Mayor Chao Rothberg was elected to the City Council in November of 2012 after serving an 8 month appointment. Mayor Chao Rothberg is the first Asian American Councilmember in the City’s history and first Mayor and elected official of Iu Mien American descent in the USA.

 

In addition to her public service, policy making, and board leadership work, Mayor Chao Rothberg is also the Executive Director of Lao Family Community Development Corporation. This nationally recognized community development corporation focuses on developing quality affordable housing, mixed-use neighborhood serving commercial projects and combining it with one stop workforce, educational, art and culture, and wrap around social service to multi-barrier youth, adults, and special needs populations leading to self-sufficiency. Lao Family Community Development (www.lfcd.org) operates in 6 locations throughout Northern California.

 

Mayor Chao Rothberg understands the power of an excellent education having attended public and private schools, graduating from UC Berkeley, attending Golden Gate University’s Executive MBA Program in San Francisco, and graduating from the Sierra Health Foundation-USC Health Leadership Fellowship Program.  Mayor Chao Rothberg and her husband Jeff are raising young children.
